The Steam Railway Furka-mountain line (DFB Ltd.) is the holder of the state concession and therefore responsible for the strategy, construction, maintenance, marketing and operation of the railway.
The DFB Ltd. offers as a private railway company, the train relations, published in the timetable, notabene without periodical public subsidies.
Furthermore the DFB Ltd. fulfils a significant contribution to the valorisation and development of the tourist regions Urserental and Goms. For this purpose, the DFB Ltd. collaborates closely with the local and regional authorities and tourist organisations.
Around 520 volunteers ensure with their work the construction, maintenance and operation of the railway. They work during days or weeks according to a detailed program. There is some staff only employed annually or seasonally by the DFB Ltd.
The DFB educates and examines itself the volunteers and the employed staff according to their functions. Engin drivers, stokers, station inspectors, train leaders and flagmen are examined according to the regulations of the Federal Office of Transport (FOT).
Under the direction of experts from the construction group, the volunteers of the association offer valuable work and help during construction weeks or individual days.
The DFB passenger coaches are repaired und overhauled in the workshops of the association in Aarau and the steam locomotives in the workshop of Uzwil.
The financing of the operation and the investments in maintenance and projects is made by the selling of railway tickets, the contributions from the association Furka mountain line (VFB) and the funds and legates from the foundation Furka mountain line (SFB)
